Music and Memory :0

Hello fellow music lovers! Thank you for joining me again in my journey through this blog, and for all of the comments on the previous post! (It makes me feel so #celebrity). Today, I am going to share a couple of songs that are associated with some of my memories, whether they be good or bad. I hope you enjoy, and as always, read until the end for a picture of Chunk! (my cat)

My first selection is Manic Monday by The Bangles, and the reason I selected this song is pretty simple. Almost every Monday, from kindergarten to 5th grade, my mom would play this in the kitchen while she was either making me and my sisters' lunches, or making us a delicious breakfast. This song is always so nostalgic, and whenever I hear it I am immediately transported back into my younger self, listening to this, and thinking about the week ahead.

For my second memory, we are shifting from the kitchen with my mom to the car with my dad! I look back and remember my dad listening to lots of songs that, even though I didn't know it then, were going to become the basis of my music taste as a teen/young adult. One song in particular, Hotel California by Eagles, absolutely captivated me. From its simple yet enticing drums in the background, to the famous guitar duet at the latter half of the song, every since my dad played it for me, I can always remember loving it, and the Eagles by default. Again, like Manic Monday, this song just transports me to the passenger seat of my dads BMW wagon, with us riding to go to the hardware store, or to a car show early in the morning. If you've never heard this song, please listen to it at least once.

For my third and final memory, we go back into the kitchen with my abuelita! My abuelita, or Nannie as she is sometimes called, loves to cook, and would always ask me to play some of her CDs on her player in the kitchen while she busied herself with making picadillo or burritos. One of her favorites was, and still is, Sin Ti by Los Panchos. This song was one of her dad's favorites, and therefore reminded her of him. I never got to meet him, but listening to this song, and hearing her describe his story of immigrating here, I feel like I know him so well. This song also inspired me to learn more Spanish so I could connect to my abuelita on a greater level. Also, I always believed that listening to the songs would mean we made the food with love, and therefore it would taste better (makes sense, right?).

Thanks for reading my blog! I love sharing my life with you guys, and also getting to read others' blogs! As promised, here is your photo of Chunk (Yes, he's wearing a necklace, and No, he did not like it).

  1. Hey Colsen I just wanted to say that I really loved reading your blog and listening to all of that great music! You can never go wrong with the Eagles in my opinion but my mom seems to think otherwise sometimes lol. The Sin Ti song was a very nice song. I loved listening to it! I could see how this could be a nostalgic song for someone. It just has a certain quality that seems like it would be able to transport someone back even if they don’t have a personal connection to the song (you know what I mean?). It's nostalgic in its own way.
