Music and Us: Our Playlist !!!

Hello and welcome to my last installment for "Colsen's Cool Music Corner"! I'm so glad you all have journeyed with me thus far, and I am even more excited for this last post; I love discovering new music, and I hope you guys enjoy my picks!  For my first pick, I chose "Oye Como Va" by Tito Puente; It is a Spanish Traditional Song written in the 1960s, and was popularized by Carlos Santana on his album "Abraxas", when they re-recorded it and reworked some of the instrumentals. I chose this because I love both versions, and because not many people know about the original version by Tito Puente. Puente originally wrote it as simply a filler song for one of his upcoming albums, and it's crazy to think that such a song as this was intended to be filler.  I included both versions so you can listen and see which you like better.  For my second pick, I chose not a specific song, but a type of call, which is Tulning, a variation of Traditional Swedish H...

Music and Family!!!

Hello and welcome to my third installment of "Colsen's Cool Music Corner! This week's blog is about music and how it relates to my family, so I'm very excited to introduce you to my mother, Mrs. Angie Guy! My momma has always had so much music in her life, and is one of the biggest reasons why music is what I am pursuing in life. So, of course I had to interview her, and find out more about her relationship to music! I asked her a lot of questions, and here are her answers: Me: What are your earliest memories of music? Mom: I remember growing up during the 80s and hearing a lot of Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Madonna on the radio. I would sit and listen to them on the radio all the time, and I loved to use my hairbrush and pretend it was a microphone so I could sing the songs; I especially loved hearing Whitney's beautiful voice, she's still one of my favorites to this day.  Me: What kind of music did your parents listen to while you were growing up? M...

Music and Memory :0

Hello fellow music lovers! Thank you for joining me again in my journey through this blog, and for all of the comments on the previous post! (It makes me feel so #celebrity). Today, I am going to share a couple of songs that are associated with some of my memories, whether they be good or bad. I hope you enjoy, and as always, read until the end for a picture of Chunk! (my cat) My first selection is Manic Monday by The Bangles, and the reason I selected this song is pretty simple. Almost every Monday, from kindergarten to 5th grade, my mom would play this in the kitchen while she was either making me and my sisters' lunches, or making us a delicious breakfast. This song is always so nostalgic, and whenever I hear it I am immediately transported back into my younger self, listening to this, and thinking about the week ahead.  For my second memory, we are shifting from the kitchen with my mom to the car with my dad! I look back and remember my dad listening to lots of songs that...

Music and Me !!

Hello! My name is Colsen Guy, and I will basically be your music curator for this "experience" you are currently reading. A little about me: I started playing piano around 7 years old, and have loved it since. I grew up moving around a lot, but have basically been a South Carolina native my whole life (although I was born in Charlotte, NC). Everyone in my family plays instruments (Mom: flute, piano, percussion, Dad: percussion, Older Sister: flute, harp, Twin Sister: flute), so safe to say I grew up living with and listening to a lot of music. I am so excited to share my interests and favorite songs, and to let each and every reader get to know me a little bit better! Lets get to it! 1. A piece of music that is my current go to is  Spring by Saint Etienne . I really love this song because of the instrumentation (synth, the vibraphone in the beginning measures) and also just the general vibe of the song. I discovered this song in my junior year of high school, from one of my c...
