Music and Me !!

Hello! My name is Colsen Guy, and I will basically be your music curator for this "experience" you are currently reading. A little about me: I started playing piano around 7 years old, and have loved it since. I grew up moving around a lot, but have basically been a South Carolina native my whole life (although I was born in Charlotte, NC). Everyone in my family plays instruments (Mom: flute, piano, percussion, Dad: percussion, Older Sister: flute, harp, Twin Sister: flute), so safe to say I grew up living with and listening to a lot of music. I am so excited to share my interests and favorite songs, and to let each and every reader get to know me a little bit better! Lets get to it!

1. A piece of music that is my current go to is Spring by Saint Etienne. I really love this song because of the instrumentation (synth, the vibraphone in the beginning measures) and also just the general vibe of the song. I discovered this song in my junior year of high school, from one of my close friends at the time. It always takes me back to that era of my life, where the world did not always feel like it was balancing on my shoulders. If you like this song, you should really check out Saint Etienne; they have a lot of great stuff on Foxbase Alpha and Beta, their first two albums).

2. My second choice of music is New Flesh by Current Joys. This song is very meaningful to me as it would always be played in the car by my older sister, Reagan, on our way to school with my twin sister, Sela, during our freshman year of high school. The song it self has a very nostalgic feel to it already, so coupled with the memories of my sisters and I listening to this song, and for once actually getting along with each other, it always makes me feel sappy and nostalgic. Now that I am in college, and don't live with my sisters anymore, or see them often, whenever I play this song it makes me feel like they're not so far away. (I couldn't find any pictures of just me and my siblings, so I figured a full family photo would do).

3. A piece of music that I don't really connect with is hard to find for a music major, so I will simplify it to a genre, which would be death metal/heavy, ear obliterating rock. I think if I spend more time with the genre, I could learn to like and appreciate it more, but currently, it's not something I gravitate towards.

4. Bonus! An album that I would like to share with those reading is Wede Harer Guzo by Hailu Mergia and the Dahlak Band. I was introduced to this album by, yet again, my sisters (The more I write, the more I realize how much of my music taste has been influenced by them). This is a mostly instrumental album, with some words in Amharic, the national language of Ethiopia, where this album hails from. The reason I want to share it with y'all is simply because I like it! If you like 70s jazz organ and great music for a drive to the beach, this is the album for you.

If you read all the way to the end, you get the special treat of seeing my cat Alex, (I lovingly call him Chunk). He is a very sweet boy and I miss him dearly. (Story of the photo: He had just jumped through my window onto my roof, so I had to document it. Obviously.)

  1. Colsen I love learning about how much music has influenced your life, whether it be in your family or simply memories. I also really enjoy your music taste, I will in fact be adding some songs on my play list. Finally, you are the second person I am seeing with a disconnect to metal. Have no fear, I'll relinquish some great recommendations: War Pigs by Black Sabbath, Teardrops by Bring Me The Horizon, and Fade to Black by Metallica.

  2. Colsen, it was very interesting seeing where other fellow percussionist originate from and their background. I showed similar interest in the piano around the same age until drums took over. I love the chain that your cat has on, bro is blinged out

  3. Hi Colsen,
It's cool to see that your whole family plays various instruments, I don't come from a musical family so seeing others who do is always an interesting phenomenon to observe. I'm with you on the heavy metal, its a bit overstimulating to me as well and I think is somewhat of an acquired taste. The 70s Ethiopian Jazz is fascinating. Not something you see every day!

  4. Hey Colsen!
I am quite intrigued by the fact that your entire family place instrument and I seems to be mainly the flute or percussion which is interesting especially since you choose piano. As I was reading, I thoroughly agree that death rock or heavy metal is wildly ear obliterating. I appreciate your response and I hope you have a great rest of your semester!
    Best Wishes!

  5. Colsen, I love that we both can't see the appeal for heavy metal, maybe we can expand our taste together. I love that music is something that is shared throughout your family, it seems like a good way to bond all together. Also, I love the picture of Chunk at the end!

  6. Colsen I love your music taste because it's like so similar to mine! I'm so glad you put me on Saint Etienne because it's an amazing song and it reminds me of you :) It's wonderful that you came from such a great family that's so rich and music, watching you pursue your dreams makes me feel so proud! The only thing we need to do now is turn you into a metal fan, which I will work on over the next four years. Lastly, shout out Chunk!!!!!
